PROJECT OVERVIEW

Getting Back That Modern Groove.

It was essential when we approached rebranding Steven Vail Fine Arts (SVFA) that we do exactly that...get the modern groove back for the gallery. The brand had fallen into a space that no longer represented the quality of the curatorial presentation, the artists represented, or the nature of its evolutionary state. The most dramatic shift in perspective needed to come from a different approach to typography. With the introduction of a modern sans serif built on a square matrix, we were able to provide the foundation needed to play again. Typographic shenanigans ensued to help inform the voice and cadence of the brand and offer solutions to design constructs that could be utilized for print, web, and signage applications.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHT

Warhol & Sherman Exhibition

SVFA wanted to take a fresh approach to presenting a unique exhibition featuring two heavy hitters from the contemporary art world, Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman. Both artists use photography as the primary source of image making while taking vastly different approaches to manipulating the final product. While considering this, the idea of utilizing two essential works by each artist in a mashup collage came to fruition and eventually became the approach we brought to the client for approval. We were glad he picked up on the subtle irreverent nod to twentieth century Dada collages while using a traditional typographic serif to help anchor the seriousness of the collaboration.

Time To Apply What We Have Learned.

After the discovering the brand's voice, look, feel, and cadence, we needed to apply it to a variety of exhibition catalogues, event promotions, and guerilla advertising tactics. As you can see with our approach to the Robert Cottingham exhibition invite we designed, it was incredibly important to ensure the art took front stage while finding an agreeable balance of still exercising some autonomy so we could still play with the audience. It was also equally important to infuse a degree of playfulness in our approach to typography for every exhibition.
