PROJECT OVERVIEW
Defining The Graphic Design Architecture
The directors of the Krause Family Art Gallery approached us to discuss how we might interpret a graphic design solution for their upcoming exhibition, Dialogues on Forced Migration. The discussion did not get far before we all realized a larger, more comprehensive concept in regards to brand longevity and structure needed to be established first before we could move forward. To do this, we established 2 essential typographic data points to anchor the front and back covers. From there, no other rules exist. This simultaneously created the structure we needed (similar to an established periodical) and the freedom to investigate and discover solutions directly related to the uniqueness of each exhibition in the future.

Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos
Each exhibition offers a new opportunity to catalog an art experience through the use of graphic design. The excerpt below provides the context needed to understand why we made the design decisions we did.
"The resulting collection is a dynamic view of this powerful artwork. Despite the writers’ diverse professional backgrounds – which include public health care, entertainment, social, justice, cultural education, fashion, and entrepreneurship – some common themes emerge, speaking to a basic human connection with art. Individual lived experiences add further interpretations and observations, encouraging a multi-dimensional approach to viewing the sculpture. We invite you to explore the gallery space and take time to experience each area. For instance, on the east wall you’ll see displayed a series of word groups and phrases. These are text segments pulled from the booklet submissions, juxtaposing different elements of experience from the writers’ responses."

Just A Bit More To The Right.
The exhibition, Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos, focuses on three essential elements interacting with each other to provide a unique discourse between the viewer and the art. The first and most essential is a sculpture by Rashid Johnson, the focus of the exhibition. The second, a film installation highlighting the representation of art as a form of resilience, and the third (where we come in) a typographic installation utilizing the fragmented thoughts and reactions from the writers' submissions found within the exhibition guide. It was paramount to the client that whatever solution submitted needed to provide ample space between the sculpture and the rest of the exhibition to ensure three separate experiences.

Dialogues On Forced Migration
Each exhibition offers a new opportunity to catalog an art experience through the use of graphic design. The excerpt below provides the context needed to undeerstand why we made the design decisions we did.
"This exhibition features an international and multigenerational group of artists working in sculpture, drawing, painting, and photography. The exhibition’s nine artists, McArthur Binion, Bethany Collins, Theaster Gates, Simone Leigh, Richard Mosse, Oscar Murillo, Mark Rothko, Hank Willis Thomas, and Ai Weiwei, analyze the notions and repercussions of forced migration – looking into representations of identity, perspective, and commodity. The selected artists also pull in historical narratives from multiple societies, including the enslaved, those displaced by global wars, and instances of classism affecting refugees."
